The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship is open for Nigerians who want to begin a full-time taught master's degree in the UK in September or October 2027.
Applications for the 2027/2028 academic year opened on 8 September 2026 and close at 16:00 BST on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Britain and Nigeria are both on UTC+1 on that date, so the deadline is 4:00 p.m. Nigerian time.

This is a fully funded UK government scholarship for applicants from eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. Nigeria is on the official eligible-country list.
There is one rule many applicants misunderstand: completing the online Commonwealth Scholarship Commission form is not enough. You must apply through an approved nominating body, and that organisation may have an earlier deadline or extra conditions. The CSC does not accept unsupported direct applications for this scholarship.

What the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship covers
The official 2027/2028 funding package currently includes:
- approved tuition fees paid in full
- approved airfare from the scholar's home country to the UK and return travel at the end of the award
- a monthly living allowance of £1,712, or £2,000 for scholars studying at universities in the London metropolitan area
- a study-travel grant toward approved study-related travel
- a thesis grant for master's scholars
- additional support following an assessment where a scholar discloses a disability
- specified child allowances for an eligible widowed, divorced or single-parent scholar whose children live with them in the UK
The published child allowance is currently £622 per month for the first child and £154 per month for the second and third child under 16. This is not a general dependant allowance for every scholar with children. Read the exact conditions before planning to relocate with family.
The CSC does not reimburse a dependant's airfare, and it will not normally reimburse travel booked before an award is confirmed.
Who is eligible from Nigeria?
To be considered for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, an applicant must:
- be a citizen of, or have refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country such as Nigeria, or be a British Protected Person
- be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
- be available to begin academic study in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September 2027
- by September 2027, hold at least a first degree of upper-second-class standard, normally a 2:1
- if holding a lower-second-class degree, also have a relevant postgraduate qualification, normally a master's degree
- be unable to afford UK study without the scholarship
- follow the application process and any additional requirements of an approved nominating body
This means a 2:2 by itself will not normally meet the published central academic requirement. A 2:2 plus a relevant postgraduate qualification may qualify, but applicants must still satisfy their nominator and proposed university.
You should not assume that years of work experience replace the academic minimum. Strong professional impact can improve an eligible application, but it does not erase a central eligibility rule.
The nomination rule Nigerians must understand
The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship is an agency-nominated award. Applicants use CSC Central, but they must also be considered by a participating nominator.
The CSC identifies two broad types of nominators:
- national nominating agencies
- selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies
Nigeria's government scholarship authorities have historically managed the national nomination process. For the current cycle, applicants should confirm the live Nigerian instructions through the Federal Ministry of Education and the nominator information linked from the CSC programme page.
Do not rely on an old portal, last year's advert or an unofficial WhatsApp link. A nominating organisation may require a separate submission, screening exercise, interview or additional documents. It may also close before the central CSC deadline.
Your safest sequence is:
- Open the official Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship page.
- Confirm Nigeria's current approved nominating route.
- Read that nominator's eligibility rules and deadline.
- Complete every process required by the nominator.
- Complete and submit the CSC Central application with all supporting documents.
A nomination is not a final award. Nominators put forward selected candidates, and the CSC makes the scholarship selection from the nominated pool.
Documents you must upload before the deadline
The CSC says an application is ineligible if required supporting documents are missing by the closing date. Documents sent later by email or post are not accepted.
The central application requires:
- proof of citizenship or eligible refugee status, using a valid passport or national identity card showing your photograph, date of birth and country of citizenship
- full transcripts for every higher-education qualification
- transcripts covering all years and all pages, including available results for any course still in progress
- certified English translations where documents are not in English
- at least two signed references in PDF format
References must be on institutional letterhead or supplied through an email that clearly shows the sender's details. Applicants collect the references and upload them themselves. The referees do not submit them separately after the deadline.
The form asks you to name three qualified referees. One should be your current employer where applicable, and at least two complete references must be included with the application.
A useful reference should explain how long the referee has known you, your suitability for the proposed course, your analytical and original-thinking abilities, your persistence, strengths and weaknesses, and your potential to contribute to development in Nigeria.
Ask early. A rushed five-line reference or a missing transcript can sink an otherwise competitive application.
Do you need a UK university offer before applying?
The CSC says a university admission offer is not required at the initial application stage for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship.
However, a nominating agency may have additional requirements. You must check its rules separately. The CSC also strongly advises applicants to seek university admission when submitting the scholarship application or as soon as possible afterwards.
Your application allows you to list proposed UK universities and courses. Research them properly. A generic plan that could fit any master's programme will score less strongly than a study plan that identifies relevant modules, approaches and a realistic dissertation direction.
The programme is for full-time taught master's study at participating UK universities. Use the CSC's university information and individual university websites to confirm admission requirements and application deadlines.

Every application must connect to one of the CSC's six development themes:
- Science and technology for development
- Improving population health, health systems and capacity
- Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship
- Strengthening peace, security and governance
- Strengthening resilience and response to crises
- Access, inclusion and opportunity
Do not choose a theme because it sounds impressive. Choose the one that best matches the Nigerian problem you understand, the programme you want to study and the work you plan to do afterwards.

An MSc in Water and Environmental Engineering might connect to resilience and crisis response when the plan addresses flooding or safe water. A master's in Education Policy might fit access, inclusion and opportunity when the applicant has evidence of working on school exclusion. The connection must be specific, not decorative.
What the application asks you to explain
The Commonwealth form is not simply a record of grades. It asks for evidence that you have a credible study plan and the potential to create measurable development impact.
Applicants provide information including:
- undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications
- employment history and its relevance to the proposed UK programme
- publications and prizes, where applicable
- proposed universities and courses
- a detailed study plan
- award objectives
- career plans for the first five years after the scholarship
- longer-term career plans
- a personal statement
- voluntary work and leadership experience
- a four-part development-impact statement
The CSC's three central selection areas are academic merit, quality of the study plan and development impact.
How to build a convincing development-impact statement
The four parts of the statement should form one chain.
Part 1: define the development problem
Explain the problem at global, national and local levels, then connect it to your selected CSC theme and sector. Use credible Nigerian context rather than broad claims such as “Africa lacks development.”
Part 2: explain how you will use the new skills
Show what you will do after the scholarship. Name the type of organisation, policy, service, product, research or programme where the new skills will be applied.
Part 3: describe the expected change
Identify concrete outcomes, the timeframe and the people who should benefit. Separate immediate outputs from longer-term results.
Part 4: explain how impact will be measured
Choose indicators that match the plan: households reached, processing time reduced, teachers trained, businesses supported, policy adoption, health outcomes or access rates. Avoid numbers you cannot defend.
The official applicant advice warns against focusing only on personal success. A higher salary or international qualification may benefit you, but the selection panel wants to understand what changes for communities, institutions or sectors in Nigeria.
How to make the study plan specific
The selection criteria reward applicants who explain what they want to learn and how it supports their objectives. Research:
- the programme's compulsory and optional modules
- the teaching and assessment approach
- relevant faculty, research groups or centres
- practical projects or placement opportunities
- a possible dissertation topic
- why the programme offers something not readily available through your current experience
Do not paste course-page language. Explain the connection between each selected feature and the capability you need.
For example, an applicant working on agricultural supply chains might explain how a module in geospatial analysis will help identify transport bottlenecks, while a policy-evaluation module will help measure whether a state intervention reduces post-harvest loss.
That is more convincing than saying a university is “world-class and internationally recognised.”
A practical application schedule
Immediately
- confirm your eligibility and degree classification
- identify the current Nigerian nominating route
- register on CSC Central and save your reference number and passcode securely
- ask two or three qualified referees for detailed references
- request complete transcripts from every higher-education institution attended
During the first drafting stage
- choose the most accurate development theme
- define one Nigerian development problem you genuinely understand
- shortlist relevant one-year taught master's programmes
- map each course feature to a skills gap
- outline measurable short- and long-term outcomes
Before submission
- upload the identity document, every transcript page and at least two references
- check that names and dates agree throughout the application
- verify that every required nominator process is complete
- proofread every statement for specificity and clarity
- submit well before 4:00 p.m. Nigerian time on 20 October
The CSC recommends preparing answers outside the application system before entering the final version. The form uses two-factor authentication, so retain access to the phone or second email address used to log in.
Common reasons strong applicants fail
- applying with a 2:2 but no relevant postgraduate qualification
- submitting only the final page or final year of a transcript
- uploading fewer than two acceptable references
- allowing a referee to send a document after the deadline
- completing CSC Central without following the nominating body's process

Can an agent guarantee selection?
No. The CSC does not charge an application fee, nomination is not a scholarship guarantee, and final selection is competitive.
Must a scholar return to Nigeria after the programme?
Yes. Returning home after the award is a condition of the scholarship because the programme is designed to support development in scholars' home countries.
