You know that moment when you see “fully funded UK scholarship” and your mind has already travelled to London before your browser finishes loading? Then you open the eligibility page and discover there is another scholarship with almost the same Commonwealth name.
That confusion costs applicants time every year. The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is not the same as the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship. It is a fully funded award tied to specific Master’s courses at participating UK universities, and Nigerians are eligible.

The 2027/28 application round opens on Tuesday 10 November 2026 and closes at 4:00pm GMT on Tuesday 8 December 2026. Study begins in September or October 2027. You have a short window, so this is the kind of application you prepare before the portal opens.
At a glance: full tuition, approved return airfare, monthly living allowance, study-related support and a 12-month UK Master’s degree. Applications are free and must be submitted through CSC Central.
What is the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship?
The scholarship is jointly funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK and participating British universities. Its purpose is to train talented professionals from eligible developing Commonwealth countries who could not otherwise afford a UK Master’s degree.
Unlike a general scholarship that follows you to any university, this award is attached to approved courses at participating universities. You must choose from the official 2027 list when it is published, apply for admission to the university, and also complete the CSC scholarship application.
The award normally lasts 12 months and covers full-time taught Master’s study only. It does not fund undergraduate degrees or PhDs.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship 2027 deadline
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 10 November 2026 |
| Applications close | 8 December 2026 at 4:00pm GMT |
| UK study begins | September/October 2027 |
| Course length | Normally 12 months |
Do not wait until 8 December. The CSC warns that its system becomes very busy near the deadline, and an application without every required document is ineligible. Aim to submit several days early.
What the scholarship covers
This is genuinely fully funded. According to the CSC’s current 2027/28 guidance, each award provides:
- Approved airfare from Nigeria to the UK and a return flight at the end of the scholarship.
- Full approved tuition fees, so the scholar does not pay part of the tuition.
- A monthly living allowance of £1,712, or £2,000 for scholars at universities in the London metropolitan area, at the current quoted rates.
- A warm-clothing allowance where applicable.
- A thesis or dissertation preparation grant where applicable.
- A study-travel grant for approved study-related travel.
- A contribution towards a mandatory UK visa TB test where required and supported by receipts.
- Additional assessed support for scholars who disclose a disability.
There is limited child support for eligible widowed, divorced or single-parent scholars, but the CSC warns that family allowances are only a contribution and may not cover the real cost of bringing dependants to the UK.
Are Nigerians eligible?
Yes. Nigeria appears on the official list of eligible countries. To be considered, you must:
- Be a Nigerian citizen, or have eligible refugee status, and be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
- Be available to begin UK study in September 2027.
- By September 2027, hold at least a 2:1 first degree, or a 2:2 plus a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a Master’s degree.
- Not have studied or worked for one academic year or more in a high-income country.
- Be unable to afford UK study without the scholarship.
- Provide every supporting document in the required format before the deadline.
There is no general CSC age limit. However, your selected course and university may have their own admission requirements.
Can someone with a 2:2 apply?
Yes, but a 2:2 alone is normally not enough. The official rule allows a lower second-class degree when it is combined with a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a Master’s degree. If your CGPA is not strong, do not hide from the requirement—confirm exactly how your Nigerian degree is assessed and build the rest of your evidence carefully.
Our guide on studying abroad from Nigeria with a low CGPA explains how to present academic context honestly without making excuses.
You need two applications, not one
This is the detail that catches people. You must complete the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship application through CSC Central, and you must separately apply for admission to an approved Master’s course at a participating UK university.
Some universities may have their own scholarship form or an earlier course-admission deadline. Read the instructions for each university instead of assuming the CSC deadline controls everything. You may apply to more than one approved course and university, but you can accept only one Shared Scholarship.

Documents Nigerians should prepare now
The official application requires:
- Proof of citizenship: a valid passport or national identity document showing your photograph, date of birth and country of citizenship.
- Complete higher-education transcripts: every page for all qualifications, including current transcripts if you are still studying. Documents not in English require certified translations.
- At least two signed references: uploaded as PDFs on institutional letterhead or from an email that clearly identifies the sender.
The application also asks for your qualifications, employment history, publications or prizes, three referees, a study plan, career objectives, leadership and volunteering experience, and a detailed development-impact statement.

The development-impact statement is the heart of the application
Many Nigerians write scholarship essays as if the panel is rewarding suffering. Your story matters, but the CSC is selecting people who can connect a real development problem to a credible plan.
Your statement should answer four practical questions:
- What problem exists globally, in Nigeria and in the community or sector you know?
- How will the selected Master’s course give you the skills to address it?
- What measurable change will you create after returning home, for whom and within what timeframe?
- How will you prove that the change happened?
“I want to help my country” is not a plan. “Within three years, I will train 200 primary-health workers across two Nigerian states and measure referral accuracy before and after the programme” is closer to a development plan.
How candidates are selected
Participating universities conduct the first selection and nominate candidates to the CSC. The principal criteria are academic merit, the quality of the proposal and the applicant’s potential development impact.
Your course choice must therefore make sense. A candidate working in public health should not choose an unrelated programme simply because the university sounds prestigious. Show a straight line from your experience, to the course, to the Nigerian problem you intend to solve.
A stronger application plan
Before 10 November
- Shortlist approved courses as soon as the 2027 list is released.
- Confirm each university’s separate admission process and deadline.
- Request transcripts and references now.
- Write your development-impact answers outside the portal.
- Check your passport validity and ensure names match across documents.
When the portal opens
- Create your CSC Central account and keep the reference email safe.
- Complete every section instead of rushing the essays first.
- Upload clear PDF documents and check that every transcript page appears.
- Save frequently; refreshing the application can cause unsaved work to be lost.
- Submit early because applications cannot be edited after submission.
Common mistakes that can destroy a good application
- Applying to a course that is not on the approved Shared Scholarship list.
- Completing only the CSC form and forgetting the university admission application.
- Uploading an incomplete transcript.
- Using generic references that do not discuss ability or impact.
- Writing a development statement with no beneficiaries, timeline or measurable result.
- Claiming the scholarship is a pathway to remain permanently in the UK. Award holders undertake to return home after the programme.
- Paying an “agent” for a scholarship application that the CSC provides free of charge.
Is IELTS compulsory?
The CSC itself does not require candidates to take IELTS. Your chosen university may still require evidence of English proficiency for admission, so check the course page. Do not interpret “CSC does not require IELTS” as “every UK university will waive English requirements.”
See our guide to studying abroad from Nigeria without IELTS for the alternatives some institutions accept.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship fully funded?
Yes. It covers approved tuition fees, return airfare, a monthly living allowance and additional study-related support under the published conditions.
Can Nigerian graduates apply?
Yes. Nigeria is officially eligible. Applicants normally need a 2:1, or a 2:2 plus a relevant postgraduate qualification.
When does the 2027 application open?
The application opens on 10 November 2026 and closes at 4:00pm GMT on 8 December 2026.
Can I apply without university admission?
You must also apply to an approved course at a participating university. Check the university’s rules because its course deadline may differ from the CSC deadline.
Do I need to pay an application fee?
The CSC does not charge applicants to use its scholarship application system. Be cautious of anyone demanding money to “secure” the award.
Final word
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is one of the rare opportunities where tuition, flight and living costs are covered together. That makes it competitive—but not mysterious. Start with the approved course, prove that your plan addresses a real Nigerian development problem, and make every document complete.
Applications open on 10 November. Use the days before then to prepare, not to postpone.
