It is one thing to dream about studying in Canada; it is another thing to see the school fees, accommodation and flight costs and wonder where the money will come from. For a brilliant Nigerian secondary-school student whose family cannot comfortably fund an overseas degree, the University of British Columbia’s International Scholars Program can turn that difficult conversation into a real plan.

UBC is accepting applications for students who want to begin an undergraduate degree in September 2027. The programme combines academic excellence, leadership and demonstrated financial need. But this is not a scholarship you rush two days before the deadline: your school must nominate you, a teacher must provide a reference, and you must also apply for admission to UBC.

What does the scholarship cover?

UBC does not advertise one flat cash figure for every International Scholar. The university reviews a selected student’s financial situation and structures need-based support around the demonstrated gap. Depending on the award and assessment, support can be substantial. The Vantage One Excellence Award, for example, may cover up to the full cost of the academic programme and living expenses.

The International Scholars umbrella includes the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award, Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award, International Impact Award and Vantage One Excellence Award. You do not simply choose whichever name sounds biggest; UBC considers eligible applicants for the appropriate award.

“Fully funded” should never mean “I will spend zero naira from today.” A Nigerian applicant may still need money for documents, tests where required, passport processing, the UBC application fee, biometrics, medicals, visa-related costs and travel. At the time of writing, UBC lists the undergraduate application fee for an international applicant who requires a study permit as CAD 173.25. Check the official dates and deadlines and current fee before paying.

Who is eligible?

You should normally meet all of the following conditions:

  • You are an international student who will study in Canada with a Canadian study permit.
  • You are applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • You are entering UBC directly from an accredited secondary school.
  • You graduated from secondary school no earlier than June 2026 for September 2027 entry.
  • Your academic record is exceptional—UBC describes this as all As or an equivalent standard.
  • You can show meaningful leadership, community service or other positive contributions outside the classroom.
  • Your family has significant financial need that would otherwise prevent you from attending UBC.
  • You meet UBC’s admission requirements, including the English-language admission standard.

If you already hold a university degree, are transferring from another university or cannot document your family’s finances honestly, this particular programme may not fit your situation. Explore our broader guide to fully funded scholarships for Nigerians for alternatives.

The school nomination is where many applicants get stuck

Imagine discovering the scholarship on 13 November and only then calling your principal. That is exactly the kind of last-minute pressure to avoid. Your secondary school must nominate you, and the school nominator cannot also be the teacher who writes your academic reference. UBC states that a school may nominate up to two students for the Vancouver campus and one for the Okanagan campus.

Speak to your principal, counsellor or authorised school official early. Take a one-page summary of the programme, deadline and nomination process with you. Explain why you are a strong candidate without behaving as though the nomination is automatically yours. If several excellent students are interested, the school may need time to choose fairly.

How to apply from Nigeria

  1. Check your degree and campus. Use UBC’s programme finder and confirm that your intended course is eligible and matches your subjects.
  2. Ask your school for nomination. Give your nominator enough time to complete the required form.
  3. Choose a different teacher referee. Pick someone who knows your academic ability and character well enough to give specific examples.
  4. Apply for admission. Start the official UBC undergraduate application; the scholarship does not replace the admission application.
  5. Complete the award application. Prepare honest details about family income, expenses and assets, plus your activities, achievements and written responses.
  6. Submit by 15 November 2026. Do not wait for unstable internet or a payment issue on deadline day.
  7. Send outstanding documents. UBC’s published timeline requires admission documents and proof that you meet the English standard by 31 January.
  8. Monitor your email. Shortlisted applicants may receive a video-interview request between January and March, while decisions are generally released from February to April.

How to make your essays sound human

Your story does not need to begin with “Since I was a child, I have always wanted to change the world.” The scholarship team will read many versions of that sentence. Start with a real moment: the day you noticed a problem in your school, the person your project helped or the setback that forced you to rethink your approach.

UBC’s application asks for several short essays, generally 150–250 words. With that limit, every paragraph must do a job. Use the simple structure: situation, action, measurable result and lesson. Instead of saying “I am a great leader,” show how you organised people, handled disagreement and what changed because you acted.

Do not inflate numbers, invent hardship or allow an AI tool to erase your natural voice. A clean, specific Nigerian story is stronger than a polished essay that could belong to anybody. For more writing guidance, read our guide on writing a study-abroad statement without copying templates.

Documents and information to prepare

  • Valid international passport or identity details
  • WAEC or NECO results and secondary-school transcripts, as applicable
  • Predicted or final grades requested for admission
  • School nomination details
  • Teacher referee’s contact information
  • Record of leadership, volunteering, awards and extracurricular activities
  • Accurate family income, expenses and asset information with supporting evidence
  • English-language evidence where your circumstances require it

Keep scans clear and names consistent across every document. Our study-abroad document checklist can help you organise the wider process, but UBC’s official checklist remains the final authority.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until November before discussing nomination with your school.
  • Using the same person as school nominator and teacher referee.
  • Writing only about grades and giving no evidence of service or leadership.
  • Submitting vague financial information or figures that contradict supporting documents.
  • Applying for a programme without checking its subject prerequisites.
  • Paying an “agent” who promises guaranteed selection. UBC chooses scholars; nobody outside the university can sell you a place.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians apply for the UBC International Scholars Program?

Yes. Nigerians can apply if they meet UBC’s international-student, academic, leadership, admission and financial-need requirements.

Do I need IELTS?

You must meet UBC’s English Language Admission Standard, but the acceptable route depends on your education and qualifications. Check UBC’s current English requirements rather than assuming one test is compulsory for every Nigerian applicant.

Can I apply without my school’s nomination?

No. Nomination is a core part of this scholarship process. Begin the conversation with your school early.

Is the scholarship guaranteed if I have straight As?

No. Excellent grades are essential, but UBC also examines leadership, community contribution, admission strength and verified financial need. The competition is intense.

Summary

The UBC International Scholars Program is one of the strongest undergraduate funding opportunities available to an exceptional Nigerian student with genuine financial need. The key date is 15 November 2026, but your real deadline should be earlier: secure your school nomination, choose a separate teacher referee, begin the admission application and gather financial evidence now.
