The Australia plan usually starts innocently. You see a salary in Australian dollars, convert it to naira and suddenly everybody in the family group chat is advising you to “just apply.” Then you open the visa requirements, add a skills assessment, English test, medicals, flights, rent bond and temporary accommodation—and the calculator begins to behave like an enemy.
The honest answer is that there is no single Australia relocation price. A software engineer invited for skilled permanent residence will budget differently from a nurse with an employer, and both will spend differently from an international student paying tuition. So let us cost the journey by route, then build a realistic landing budget.

How much should a Nigerian budget to relocate to Australia?
For a single applicant in 2026, a sensible planning range is roughly ₦10 million to ₦18 million for an independent skilled-migration journey and initial settlement, excluding major optional professional fees. Employer-sponsored applicants may personally spend less if the employer covers some costs. A student’s first-year requirement can easily exceed ₦35 million to ₦60 million once tuition and the official living-cost evidence are included.
These naira estimates use a round planning rate of about ₦950–₦1,000 per AUD. Exchange rates, bank charges and ticket prices move, so keep the Australian-dollar figures as your source of truth and convert again before every payment.
First choose the relocation route
Skilled Independent visa: subclass 189
The Skilled Independent visa is points-tested permanent residence and does not require employer or state sponsorship. You first need an occupation on the relevant list, a positive skills assessment, competent English and an invitation through SkillSelect. The legal minimum is 65 points, but meeting 65 does not guarantee an invitation.
As of October 2026, the Department of Home Affairs lists the base application charge from AUD6,135. You must be under 45 when invited. Before reaching the visa-payment stage, you may already have paid for English testing, skills assessment, police certificates and document preparation.
State-nominated and regional skilled routes
Subclass 190 provides permanent residence with state or territory nomination, while subclass 491 is a provisional regional route. Both use SkillSelect, occupation requirements and points. State nomination rules, occupation lists and application fees vary, so research the specific state rather than treating “Australia” as one programme.
Employer-sponsored work route
An Australian employer may sponsor an eligible worker where the occupation and applicant meet the current rules. The cost split depends on the visa and employer: some employer-side charges cannot simply be passed to the worker, while the applicant may still pay personal visa, medical, police and travel costs. Never pay a stranger to “buy sponsorship.”
Student visa: subclass 500
The study route normally requires admission and a Confirmation of Enrolment, the Genuine Student requirement, adequate health insurance, English evidence where applicable and financial capacity. It can be a valid education path, but it is not a cheap shortcut to permanent residence.
Australia relocation cost for a skilled applicant
| Expense | Planning range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Skills assessment | AUD500–AUD1,500+ | Depends on occupation and assessing authority |
| English test | AUD400–AUD500 equivalent | Provider, location and retakes change the total |
| Skilled visa application | From AUD6,135 for subclass 189 | Official base charge; family costs extra |
| Medical examination | Local clinic quotation | Only use an approved panel physician |
| Police certificates and documents | ₦100,000–₦400,000+ | Countries lived in and translations matter |
| One-way flight | ₦1.2m–₦2.5m | City, season, stops and baggage matter |
| Temporary accommodation | AUD1,000–AUD2,500 | Allow two to four weeks |
| Rent bond and advance rent | AUD2,500–AUD5,500+ | City and property type drive the amount |
| Initial living buffer | AUD4,000–AUD8,000 | Food, transport, phone and emergencies |
The table is a planning framework, not a government quotation. Your occupation’s assessment can cost much more, and a family application can rise sharply because each additional applicant attracts fees, examinations, flights and settlement costs.
What does an Australian student need to show?
For a student visa, Home Affairs currently says an applicant must be able to cover travel, 12 months of course fees and 12 months of living costs. The published living-cost minimum is AUD29,710 for the student, plus AUD10,394 for a partner and AUD4,449 for each accompanying child. School costs may also apply.

For travel-cost calculations, the official guidance states AUD1,500 where the applicant will be returning to Africa. This is a visa-evidence figure, not a promise that your real airfare will cost AUD1,500.
An alternative annual-income route may be available: the published threshold is at least AUD87,856 for a parent or partner, or AUD102,500 where family members accompany you. Official tax documents are required; a salary letter alone is not the same thing.
If your first-year tuition is AUD35,000, the calculation can already be AUD66,210 before visa fee, insurance, medicals and other family costs: AUD35,000 tuition + AUD29,710 living cost + AUD1,500 travel. At a planning rate of ₦950 per AUD, that is about ₦62.9 million. Any tuition already paid and accepted under the rules can affect the evidence calculation.
The expenses Nigerians commonly forget
- Professional registration: Nurses, doctors, teachers, engineers and other regulated professionals may have registration or licensing costs beyond the migration skills assessment.
- Retaking English tests: Your target score for competitive points may be higher than the basic visa threshold.
- Exchange and transfer charges: The mid-market rate is rarely the exact amount your bank debits.
- Health insurance: Students require Overseas Student Health Cover; other applicants should understand when public healthcare access begins.
- Rental setup: Bond, rent in advance, furniture, kitchen items and transport from temporary accommodation arrive together.
- Driving and transport: Licence conversion rules vary by state, and commuting from cheaper suburbs may not be cheap.
- Family costs: Visa additions, school arrangements, childcare and multiple flights can transform the budget.
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or regional Australia?
Sydney often offers the highest housing pressure. Melbourne has a large job market and public-transport network, but rent is still substantial. Brisbane may offer a different balance of climate, employment and housing, while Adelaide, Perth and regional locations can have distinct visa opportunities and cost structures.
Do not choose a city only because somebody you know lives there. Compare your occupation’s demand, professional registration, likely salary, rent near realistic workplaces and the conditions attached to any state or regional nomination.
A safer way to build the budget
- Confirm the route before spending. Read the official visa page and occupation requirements.
- Price the mandatory pre-visa items. Get the exact skills-assessment, English-test and registration fees for your profession.
- Keep an AUD worksheet. Convert to naira only after the Australian-dollar total is clear.
- Add a currency buffer. A 10–15% margin protects you from rate changes and bank charges.
- Separate visa money from landing money. Paying the application fee does not fund rent after arrival.
- Do not resign too early. An EOI is not an invitation, and an invitation is not a granted visa.
Use the official Australian visa pricing table and SkillSelect guidance for current figures. Our guide to skilled work routes helps you compare Australia with other destinations, while the proof-of-funds guide explains how genuine access to money is assessed.
Should you use an agent?
You can research and manage many stages yourself. If you want immigration assistance, verify that the adviser is legally authorised for Australian immigration work. A real professional should explain the route and risks; nobody can guarantee a SkillSelect invitation or visa grant.
For a structured DIY planning system, the No-Agent Japa Blueprint can help you organise your documents and decisions. It does not replace official immigration rules or professional advice for a complicated case.
In summary
A single Nigerian skilled applicant should plan roughly ₦10 million to ₦18 million for the migration process and a responsible landing buffer, while a student’s first-year tuition and financial-capacity requirement can exceed ₦35 million to ₦60 million. Your true figure depends on the visa, occupation, family size, city and exchange rate. Choose the route first, cost every mandatory step in Australian dollars, add a currency buffer and verify fees directly before paying.
Australian immigration fees and rules change. All figures are planning estimates unless identified as official published amounts; confirm the current requirements with Australia’s Department of Home Affairs.
