You have finally agreed on a holiday with your friends. One person wants Europe, another has already priced Dubai, and the group chat is becoming a meeting without minutes. Then somebody mentions Cape Verde: an Atlantic island country with warm beaches, Portuguese-African culture and an entry process that is friendlier to a Nigerian passport.

Before you start buying beachwear, know this: Cape Verde—officially Cabo Verde—is not one single resort. It is an archipelago of ten islands, and choosing the right island will shape your flights, budget and experience. This guide explains the rules and helps you plan a trip that will not surprise your bank account halfway through.

Can Nigerians travel to Cape Verde without a visa?

Yes. Nigerian citizens are citizens of ECOWAS and may stay in Cabo Verde without a visa or residence permit for up to 90 days, according to Cabo Verde’s immigration authority. However, visa-free does not mean paperwork-free.

Foreign visitors, including ECOWAS citizens, must complete the official EASE traveller pre-registration, preferably at least five days before arrival. You provide passport, flight, departure and accommodation information. International air passengers normally pay the Airport Security Fee, listed by the government as 3,400 CVE (€30.83), unless an exemption applies.

Carry your EASE confirmation, a Nigerian passport valid for the trip, return or onward ticket, accommodation details and evidence that you can fund your stay. Airlines and border officials may ask for supporting documents even when no visa is required. Check the official immigration authority again shortly before departure because entry rules can change.

Which Cape Verde island should you choose?

Sal: beaches and an easy first trip

For a first holiday, Sal is the straightforward choice. Amílcar Cabral International Airport receives many international services, while Santa Maria offers long beaches, hotels, restaurants and organised excursions. It works well for travellers who want to land, unpack and relax without planning complicated island transfers.

Santiago: city life, history and local culture

Santiago is home to Praia, the capital, and Cidade Velha, a UNESCO-listed historic town. Choose it if food, markets, music and history matter as much as swimming. Praia feels more like a living West African island capital than a purpose-built beach resort.

São Vicente and Santo Antão: music and mountains

Mindelo on São Vicente is known for music and nightlife. Nearby Santo Antão rewards hikers with dramatic valleys and mountain roads. They are brilliant additions, but island connections add time and cost; do not squeeze three islands into a five-day trip just to collect locations.

How much does a Cape Verde trip from Nigeria cost?

Prices move with exchange rates, season and flight connections, so treat these as planning ranges rather than quotations. For a comfortable seven-night trip, one person should consider a working budget of roughly ₦1.6 million to ₦3.2 million. A resort stay, late booking or multiple islands can push the total higher.

Flight cost will usually be the biggest line because direct services from Nigeria may be limited on your dates. Search flexible dates and compare the complete journey—not only the headline fare. A cheap itinerary with a difficult overnight connection or separate tickets can create expensive problems.

A sensible seven-day Sal itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive, check in around Santa Maria and take an easy sunset walk.
  2. Day 2: Enjoy Santa Maria Beach, the pier and the town’s restaurants.
  3. Day 3: Take a full-island tour covering Espargos, Palmeira, Buracona and desert landscapes.
  4. Day 4: Visit the Pedra de Lume salt crater and float in the mineral-rich water.
  5. Day 5: Choose a boat trip, snorkelling, diving, kitesurfing or a quiet beach day.
  6. Day 6: Keep the day flexible for shopping, local food and anything weather disrupted earlier.
  7. Day 7: Have breakfast, photograph the final views and leave enough time for the airport.

How to save money without spoiling the trip

  • Book flights before locking in a non-refundable hotel; air connections are the harder part.
  • Travel outside Christmas, Easter and European school-holiday peaks where possible.
  • Choose a guesthouse with breakfast and compare its location with daily taxi costs.
  • Use shared aluguers on routes where they are practical, but confirm the fare first.
  • Carry a card plus emergency cash. Escudos are the local currency, and euros are widely encountered in tourism areas, but change may be given in escudos.
  • Choose one main island for a short trip. Domestic flights and ferries can turn island-hopping into both a budget and scheduling problem.

What to pack from Nigeria

  • Passport, EASE proof, tickets, accommodation confirmation and insurance details
  • Light clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
  • A light jacket for windy evenings and boat trips
  • Comfortable shoes for cobbled streets or volcanic terrain
  • Universal adaptor, power bank and copies of important documents
  • Prescription medicines in original packaging

Do not assume tropical means permanently humid. Cape Verde can be dry and windy, particularly on Sal. Drink water, respect sea warnings and use licensed operators for water activities.

Is Cape Verde better than Ghana or Benin Republic?

They offer different trips. Cape Verde gives you an island-resort atmosphere and striking volcanic scenery, but flights are usually more expensive. Ghana offers a broader city, culture and road-trip experience, while Benin Republic is easier for a short overland break from Lagos.

In summary

Cape Verde is one of the more accessible island holidays for Nigerians: ECOWAS citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days, but EASE pre-registration and the applicable airport security fee still matter. Pick Sal for an easy beach holiday, Santiago for history and local life, or São Vicente and Santo Antão for music and mountains. Budget the flight first, choose one main island for a short visit and verify the latest entry rules before you pay.

Travel requirements and prices change. Confirm current rules with Cabo Verde’s official authorities and current costs with your airline and accommodation provider before booking.
