Canada Express Entry changed today, and if your plan was based on an old YouTube video, your CRS calculation may already be wrong.
From 3 November 2026, Canada introduced a new Labour Market Integration factor, changed the points awarded for Canadian work experience, and brought job-offer points back for eligible high-wage occupations. IRCC says it will recalculate existing profiles and pause invitation rounds for up to two weeks while the changes take effect.

For Nigerians applying from outside Canada, the important message is not “Express Entry is closed.” It is still Canada’s main online system for skilled-worker permanent residence. But your strategy must now account for the new CRS structure, category-based draws, language scores, education assessment, work history and proof of funds.
Current update: invitation rounds are temporarily paused while IRCC recalculates profiles. Do not delete your profile or pay anyone promising a guaranteed invitation.
What is Canada Express Entry?
Express Entry is the online system Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada uses to manage skilled-worker applications under three programmes:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program;
- Canadian Experience Class;
- Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Most Nigerians applying from Nigeria use the Federal Skilled Worker Program. You first establish eligibility, create a profile and enter the pool. IRCC ranks profiles using the Comprehensive Ranking System. Candidates selected in a general, programme-specific or category-based round receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.

What changed on 3 November 2026?
The biggest change is a new CRS section called the Labour Market Integration factor. It can award points for either qualifying Canadian work experience or a qualifying high-wage Canadian job offer. You cannot receive both; the system uses whichever gives the higher score.
The maximum under this factor is 150 points for a candidate without a spouse and 140 points for someone applying with a spouse or common-law partner.
Canadian work-experience points
| Canadian experience | With spouse | Without spouse |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 1 year | 0 | 0 |
| 1 year | 35 | 40 |
| 2 years | 46 | 53 |
| 3 years | 56 | 64 |
| 4 years | 63 | 72 |
| 5 years or more | 70 | 80 |
Eligible Canadian experience in high-wage occupations can add 20, 40 or 70 points depending on the occupation’s median wage level. IRCC defines high-wage categories through National Occupational Classification codes, not the salary on one person’s offer.
Job-offer points are back—but only for eligible high-wage work
A qualifying job offer can now provide 50, 70 or 100 CRS points depending on its high-wage level. A job that is not in an eligible high-wage occupation receives zero points under this factor.
IRCC also says a Labour Market Impact Assessment is no longer required for a job offer to qualify for programme eligibility or CRS points, and an LMIA does not give extra priority. Officers will still assess whether the employer is active, able to fulfil the offer and compliant with employment law, and whether the candidate is qualified and likely to take the job.
That makes fake Canadian job offers even more dangerous. Read our guide on how to spot a fake visa-sponsorship offer before paying a recruiter.
Are invitation rounds suspended?
Temporarily. IRCC says recalculating existing profiles may take up to two weeks from 3 November 2026 and invitation rounds will pause during the update. This is a technical pause, not the cancellation of Express Entry.
Your score may change automatically. Take a screenshot of the old breakdown for your records, then check the profile again after recalculation. Do not withdraw a valid profile simply because the displayed score is temporarily changing.

Can Nigerians apply for Express Entry in 2026?
Yes. Express Entry is not restricted by nationality. A Nigerian can create a profile from Nigeria if they qualify for at least one managed programme.
For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the usual starting points include skilled work experience in an eligible NOC, an approved language test, foreign-education assessment, and at least 67 points on the programme’s separate selection grid. That 67-point grid determines eligibility for FSW; it is not the same as your CRS score in the pool.
Documents to prepare from Nigeria
- International passport: make sure it remains valid throughout the process.
- Language test: approved English or French results. IELTS General Training is different from IELTS Academic.
- Educational Credential Assessment: an approved organisation evaluates foreign qualifications.
- Employment evidence: letters should explain duties, dates, hours, salary and employer details, not merely your job title.
- Proof of funds: required for many FSW and Federal Skilled Trades applicants.
- Police certificates: typically needed after an invitation for relevant countries of residence.
- Medical examination and biometrics: follow IRCC instructions at the appropriate stage.
- Civil-status documents: marriage, divorce, birth or name-change evidence where applicable.
Never choose a NOC only because the title resembles your job. IRCC looks at the lead statement and duties. Your evidence must match what you genuinely did.
Canada Express Entry proof of funds in 2026
IRCC’s currently published settlement-funds table, last updated 7 July 2025, requires:
| Family size | Minimum funds |
|---|---|
| 1 | CAD 15,263 |
| 2 | CAD 19,001 |
| 3 | CAD 23,360 |
| 4 | CAD 28,362 |
| 5 | CAD 32,168 |
| 6 | CAD 36,280 |
| 7 | CAD 40,392 |
| Each additional member | CAD 4,112 |
IRCC updates the table periodically. Check the official page before submitting or updating a profile rather than relying on a screenshot of this article.
Family size includes you, your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children—even where a family member is not accompanying you or is already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
What the Canadian bank letter must contain
IRCC asks for official letters on financial-institution letterhead showing contact details, your name, debts, account numbers, opening dates, current balances and average balances for the previous six months.

The funds must be legally accessible when you apply and when permanent residence is issued. Borrowed money and property equity do not qualify. A sudden lump sum can be questioned, so retain documents showing its legitimate source.
Canadian Experience Class applicants, and some candidates authorised to work in Canada with a valid job offer, may not need settlement funds. The system may still ask for a document; IRCC advises exempt applicants to upload an explanation letter.
What CRS score do you need?
There is no single guaranteed Express Entry score. Every draw has its own programme, category, number of invitations and cut-off.
The latest draw before the recalculation pause was a French-language round on 16 October 2026: 5,000 invitations and a lowest CRS score of 435. The preceding Canadian Experience Class round had a cut-off of 519, while a trades-occupation round on 1 October had a cut-off of 476. These numbers show why comparing your score with one random draw can mislead you.
As of 12 October, IRCC reported 229,456 candidates in the pool, including 71,612 between 451 and 500. A score of 470 may be competitive in one targeted category and insufficient in another.
How category-based draws affect Nigerians
Category-based selection lets IRCC invite candidates who meet a defined economic priority. You must still qualify for one of the three Express Entry programmes and have a profile in the pool.
Categories can favour French-language ability or particular occupations. Do not rewrite work history to force your profile into a category. Instead, check whether your genuine experience matches the listed NOC and required period.
French can be a serious strategic advantage. The October French-language draw cut off at 435, below several recent programme-specific thresholds. That does not make French a shortcut: you need approved test results and enough time to develop real ability.
How to calculate and improve your CRS
Use the official IRCC CRS tool. Avoid calculators that have not incorporated the 3 November changes.
Legitimate ways to strengthen a profile include:
- improving every language-test component;
- adding approved French results;
- obtaining more qualifying skilled experience;
- completing another recognised educational credential and assessment;
- securing a provincial nomination;
- using a spouse’s education, language or Canadian-experience factors strategically;
- obtaining a genuine qualifying high-wage job offer.
A provincial nomination can add 600 points, but provinces set their own criteria and can change streams quickly. Never pay a stranger claiming to sell a nomination.

Step-by-step Express Entry process from Nigeria
- Check programme eligibility. FSW applicants should first confirm the 67-point selection grid.
- Take an approved language test. Results affect both eligibility and CRS.
- Get an ECA. Request evaluation through an IRCC-designated organisation.
- Identify the correct NOC. Match actual duties, not aspiration.
- Calculate CRS under current rules. Recalculate after the 2026 system update.
- Create the online profile. Accurate profiles enter the pool for up to 12 months.
- Monitor draws and categories. Update new test results, qualifications, marriage or work changes.
- Receive an Invitation to Apply. Category-based invitees generally have 60 days to submit a complete PR application.
- Upload evidence and pay fees. Information must match the profile that earned the invitation.
- Complete biometrics, medical and additional requests. Follow only official IRCC instructions.
How much does Express Entry cost from Nigeria?
Your budget may include language tests, ECA fees and delivery, police certificates, medical examination, biometrics, PR application fees, translations, document procurement and settlement funds. Costs change, and proof of funds is not the same as a government fee—it remains your settlement money.

Common Express Entry mistakes Nigerians make
- Using IELTS Academic instead of the approved immigration test.
- Confusing the FSW 67 points with the CRS score.
- Selecting the wrong NOC because the title sounds similar.
- Entering dates that do not match reference letters or personal history.
- Borrowing proof-of-funds money with no legitimate access.
- Forgetting to include a non-accompanying spouse or child in family size.
- Paying for a fake job offer or LMIA.
- Assuming a profile guarantees an invitation.
- Failing to update changed circumstances.
- Using old CRS calculators after the November 2026 reforms.
Frequently asked questions
Is Canada Express Entry open for Nigerians in 2026?
Yes. Nigerians can create Express Entry profiles if they qualify. Invitation rounds are temporarily paused during the November CRS recalculation, not permanently closed.
What is the latest Express Entry CRS cut-off?
The latest published round before the pause was a French-language round on 16 October 2026 with a cut-off of 435. Cut-offs vary by draw and should never be treated as a permanent minimum.
Do I need a Canadian job offer?
No. Many candidates enter and receive invitations without a job offer. A genuine qualifying high-wage offer may now add 50, 70 or 100 CRS points under the new factor.
Is an LMIA still required for job-offer CRS points?
From 3 November 2026, IRCC says an LMIA is not required for a job offer to qualify under the new rules, and an LMIA itself gives no extra points or priority.
Can I apply without an agent?
Yes. Express Entry is an online government system. If you use a paid representative, verify that the person is authorised and remember that no representative can guarantee an invitation.
Final verdict
Express Entry is still a real route for Nigerians, but the old advice has changed. The winners will not be the people chasing rumours during the temporary pause. They will be candidates who understand the new Labour Market Integration points, document genuine work correctly, strengthen language scores, preserve legitimate settlement funds and follow the official draw data.
