An agent does not have a private door into UKVI. They do not know a visa officer, they cannot guarantee an approval, and they do not possess a secret application form hidden from ordinary Nigerians. They use the same university websites, the same GOV.UK form and the same visa centre you can use yourself.

What they are really selling is organisation: knowing what comes next, which document belongs where, and what mistake can sink an otherwise good application. That knowledge matters, but it does not have to cost you ₦500,000 or more.

You can apply for a UK Student visa from Nigeria without an agent. Thousands of applicants do. The process is not effortless, and one careless financial document can still cost you the visa fee, but it is learnable. This guide walks you from choosing a real school to receiving your eVisa, in the order the process actually happens in 2026.

Rules and fees change, so confirm them on GOV.UK before paying. Never hand your passport, bank login or email account to anyone promising a shortcut.

Step 1: choose a licensed school and a course that makes sense

Your visa journey begins before the visa form. It begins with the school.

The university or college must be on the UK's register of licensed student sponsors. If it cannot sponsor international students, no admission letter from it will produce a Student visa. Check the official register yourself instead of trusting a logo on an agent's flyer.

Then choose a course you can explain. It should connect logically to your previous education, work experience or credible career plan. Moving from accounting into financial technology is easy to defend. Moving from microbiology into an unrelated luxury-brand programme can still be legitimate, but you will need a much clearer explanation of why the change makes sense.

Visa officers are not choosing your career for you. They are deciding whether you appear to be a genuine student. A course selected only because it has the lowest deposit, with no connection to your history or future, creates a question you will eventually have to answer.

Use the School and Program Finder to build a shortlist, then confirm the course, tuition, deposit, refund policy and sponsor status directly with each institution.

Step 2: apply to the university yourself

Most UK universities accept direct applications on their own websites. Some undergraduate courses use UCAS, while many postgraduate courses have a simple university portal. Create the account with your own email address and a password only you control.

The school may request:

  • your international passport

  • academic certificates and transcripts

  • a CV

  • references

  • evidence of English ability

  • a personal statement or statement of purpose

  • evidence of work experience for some professional courses

Upload clear, complete documents and keep the filenames sensible. If a university asks for clarification, respond through the same portal or an official university email address. Do not let an agent create an application account you cannot access. You need that correspondence later, and you should always know exactly what has been submitted in your name.

Step 3: meet the conditions on your offer

You may first receive a conditional offer. That means the university is willing to admit you once you satisfy specific requirements, such as a final transcript, an English result, a reference or a tuition deposit.

For degree-level study, the immigration requirement is normally English at CEFR level B2. That does not automatically mean every applicant must take IELTS. A compliant university can assess your English itself, and some institutions accept other approved evidence. If your qualification was taught in English outside the UK, an Ecctis assessment may be relevant in some circumstances. Follow what your university and CAS process require; do not pay for a test simply because a WhatsApp group says everybody needs one.

Some postgraduate science, engineering and technology courses also require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate, called ATAS. If your course needs one, apply early. Your offer or university should tell you, and you cannot repair a missing ATAS certificate with a cover letter after submission.

Once you meet every condition, the university can make the offer unconditional and move you toward the CAS stage.

Step 4: pay only through an official university channel

Your offer will normally state the tuition deposit required before the school issues a CAS. Pay through the university's portal, bank account or approved payment partner, and confirm the payment address from the university's own website.

Never transfer a school deposit to an individual, an agent's company or a “university representative” whose account you cannot verify. A polished invoice can still be fake. If the bank details arrived only through WhatsApp, contact the university using the email address on its public website before sending money.

Read the refund policy before paying. Find out what happens if the visa is refused, if the course is cancelled, or if you cannot meet the CAS deadline. The cheapest deposit is not always the safest offer.

Step 5: check your CAS as if your visa depends on it

It does.

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS, is not simply an admission letter. It is the electronic record your university creates for UKVI. The school sends you its reference number, and you enter that number in the visa form. You must apply within six months of receiving the CAS.

Before submitting anything, check:

  • your full name and passport details

  • course title and level

  • start and end dates

  • tuition fee

  • money already paid to the university

  • how the school assessed your English

  • whether ATAS is required

  • any qualifications recorded as evidence for admission

If the tuition payment on the CAS is lower than what you actually paid, ask the university to correct it or provide the accepted evidence before applying. That figure affects how much money you must prove. A CAS error is not something to ignore because your admission is genuine.

Step 6: calculate your proof of funds exactly

Your financial requirement is normally:

Outstanding tuition for the first academic year + maintenance money for up to nine months.

The current maintenance amount is:

  • £1,529 per month in London, up to nine months: £13,761

  • £1,171 per month outside London, up to nine months: £10,539

If your CAS shows £16,000 tuition and confirms that you have paid £6,000, the outstanding tuition is £10,000. For a university outside London, you would normally need to show £10,000 plus £10,539, giving £20,539.

The required balance must usually remain available for at least 28 consecutive days. The final day of that period must fall within 31 days before your visa application date. If your balance drops below the requirement for even one day, the count can restart.

UKVI converts foreign currency using its specified exchange-rate method, so do not hold the bare Naira equivalent. Give yourself a buffer. Use the Proof of Funds Planner to calculate your target date and the Naira Converter to monitor the amount, but confirm the final requirement against your CAS and GOV.UK before submitting.

If you use a parent's money, you will normally need acceptable evidence of the relationship and permission to use the funds. If a sponsor transfers a large lump sum shortly before your application, do not invent a story to explain it. The source must be real, traceable and consistent with the documents you provide.

Step 7: take your tuberculosis test at an approved clinic

Nigerians applying to stay in the UK for more than six months generally need a tuberculosis certificate. The test must come from a clinic approved by the UK government.

Book from the official list, not from a hospital recommended in a Telegram group. Several approved Lagos clinics currently list an adult fee of ₦120,000, while IOM lists its fee in US dollars and collects the Naira equivalent under its stated process. Check the official clinic page for current prices, locations and booking instructions.

Keep the certificate safe and confirm that your personal details are correct before leaving the clinic.

Step 8: assemble the documents before opening the form

Every applicant must provide a current passport and CAS reference. Depending on your circumstances, your file may also include:

  • proof of funds

  • tuberculosis certificate

  • ATAS certificate

  • evidence used to obtain your admission

Proof of funds checker — know your exact bank balance target

Country-by-country requirements, updated regularly.

  • English-language evidence

  • scholarship or financial-sponsor letter

  • parental consent and relationship evidence if you are under 18

  • certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh

  • Do not upload a giant folder of documents UKVI did not request just to appear serious. More paper is not automatically a stronger application. The goal is a clean, consistent file in which the name, dates, course, finances and personal story agree with one another.

Use the Document Checklist to organise the file, then compare it with the personalised list produced by the official application.

Step 9: write a genuine study explanation, not an agent's template

Not every application interface asks for a separate statement of purpose, but your university, credibility assessment or supporting evidence may require you to explain your plan. This is where copied language becomes dangerous.

Your explanation should answer four simple questions:

    1. Why this course?

    2. Why this university and the UK?

    3. How does it connect to your education or work?

    4. What credible career plan follows the degree?

Specific evidence beats emotional slogans. Mention the modules, facilities, professional accreditation or teaching approach that genuinely influenced your choice. Explain how the programme closes a real gap in your career. If there is a study gap, course change, previous refusal or unusual funding arrangement, address it honestly instead of hoping nobody notices.

Do not claim that the visa is guaranteed, promise to return on a date you cannot know, or paste a dramatic “home ties” paragraph that has nothing to do with your life. The strongest statement sounds like one person who understands their own decision.

The No-Agent Japa Blueprint includes the full three-part SOP framework, document templates and case studies for difficult profiles. Use it to structure your own truth, never to manufacture one.

Build your study explanation around your genuine academic and career plans.

Step 10: complete the GOV.UK application yourself

Start from the official Student visa page on GOV.UK. The fee for an application made outside the UK is currently £558. You can apply up to six months before your course begins, but only after receiving your CAS.

The form asks about your identity, travel history, previous refusals, course, university, finances and other personal circumstances. Read each question slowly. Save your progress and review every answer before submitting.

Declare previous visa refusals accurately. UKVI can see immigration history, and hiding a refusal creates a credibility problem larger than the refusal itself. If you do not understand a question, read the official guidance or obtain regulated immigration advice. Do not guess because someone in a group chat said the question does not matter.

Step 11: pay the visa fee and health surcharge

In addition to the £558 application fee, most students pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, currently £776 per year for students. It is calculated from the length of immigration permission, not simply the months of teaching.

A 12-month course normally brings one month before the course and four months after it, producing 17 months of permission. The surcharge is calculated in six-month blocks, so the common charge for that example is £1,164. The application system calculates your actual amount from the course dates.

Allow for exchange-rate and card charges. A payment failure on a low international-card limit is an avoidable way to turn a calm application day into chaos.

Step 12: submit biometrics and your evidence

After submitting the online application, follow the instructions for proving your identity. Depending on the process available to you, this may involve attending a visa application centre to provide fingerprints and a photograph and to submit or upload supporting documents.

Use only the appointment and upload route linked from the official application. Optional services at a visa centre may make the appointment more convenient, but they do not make the visa officer more likely to approve you.

Keep copies of the final form, payment confirmations, uploaded evidence and appointment details. Do not change your financial story after submission or send contradictory documents unless UKVI requests clarification.

Step 13: prepare for a credibility interview

Not every applicant is interviewed, but everyone should be ready. A credibility interview may explore:

    • why you chose the course and institution

    • what you know about the modules

    • how you will fund the programme

    • your accommodation plans

    • your academic and employment history

    • why the course makes sense for your career

The correct preparation is not memorising a script. It is understanding your own application. If you claim a course is perfect for you but cannot name one module, or a sponsor is funding everything but you cannot explain what they do, the problem is not your accent. It is the gap between the form and your answers.

Review the exact information you submitted. Practise answering naturally and truthfully. The Blueprint includes common UKVI credibility questions, answer structures and red flags to help you prepare without sounding rehearsed.

Step 14: wait for the decision before buying your flight

UKVI says Student visa applications made outside the UK usually receive a decision within three weeks after the process begins, although individual cases can take longer. Processing starts after you prove your identity through the instructed route.

Do not book non-refundable travel because a friend received a decision in five days. Do not resign from your job, sell essential property or announce an arrival date until the immigration decision is confirmed.

If successful, you will receive instructions for accessing your eVisa, the online record of your immigration status. Set up the UKVI account as instructed and link the passport you will use to travel. Check that the personal details and conditions are correct.

The mistakes an agent cannot rescue you from

Whether you apply alone or pay someone, these errors still belong to your file:

    • using a school that is not a licensed sponsor

    • choosing a course you cannot explain

    • submitting inconsistent dates or employment history

    • allowing the bank balance to fall below the requirement

    • using fake or temporarily borrowed funds

    • hiding a previous refusal

    • paying through an unverified link

    • copying an SOP that contradicts your real background

    • letting someone submit a form you never reviewed

An agent's name does not appear on the visa decision. Yours does. That is why understanding your own application is not optional, even if someone assists you.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a UK Student visa from Nigeria without an agent?

Yes. You can apply directly to a licensed university, receive your CAS and complete the Student visa application through GOV.UK. An agent is not an official requirement.

How much is the UK Student visa fee in 2026?

The application fee from outside the UK is currently £558. You also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge and any applicable TB test, document, travel or optional service costs.

Do I need IELTS for a UK Student visa?

Not always. Degree-level students must normally meet CEFR B2, but a compliant higher education provider may assess English itself. Your university and CAS will show the accepted route for your application.

How much proof of funds do I need?

You normally need outstanding first-year tuition plus £13,761 for maintenance in London or £10,539 outside London. Your CAS, payments and circumstances determine the exact figure.

Can an agent guarantee my UK visa?

No. The decision belongs to UKVI. Anyone guaranteeing approval or claiming a private connection to a visa officer is giving you a reason to walk away.

How long does a UK Student visa take from Nigeria?

The usual published service time for an application made outside the UK is three weeks after processing begins, but cases can take longer. Do not book non-refundable travel before the decision.
